Reviewing and Selecting Apps

  • Teachers can check out iPads for planning and app review from the library
  • Find Apps using the Apps Store
  • Read Reviews
  • Look for Award Winners
  • Use the App Review Rubric

How do I checkout iPads for my class to use?

Google Calendar Reservations Please only reserve the iPads for the periods you will be using them.  Do not block entire days or weeks.  These are shared devices.

How do I get the app I need on them?

At least 48 hours in advance, complete the App Review Rubric

Where are the iPad carts stored?

The room that the grade level team selected.

What happens if one is damaged?

Please complete a tech request and send the device to the IT office

What happens if an iPad is lost?

Please email the IT ASAP.  We have Find My Device setup to locate missing devices.

How do I get student work off of the iPad?

We recommend uploading to Google Drive into a shared folder.  Students and teachers have unlimited storage in Google Drive through their amersol.edu.pe accounts.  It is important to test the app you wish for students to use before hand to ensure that it allows for students to export their content.

How do I distribute the iPads?

Each iPad has a number on it, please know which kids has which iPad, so if the project lasts more than one day, you know who has which device.  Also, incase one iPad is missing we know who has it last.

Who is responsible for counting the iPads?

Each teacher that uses the iPads with a class should ensure they have recollected all of them.  We have numbered the iPads to help with this.  Please also ensure that they are all plugged in and charging so that other classes are able to use them when they need to.

What additional resources do we have for use with iPads?

  • 2 class sets of styluses can be checked out from AV
  • microphones can be checked out from AV
  • Film Studio in the PAC can be checked out using Google Calendar for green screen filming

iPad Team

Posted by ssweeney on September 30, 2015

We are excited about piloting several different new tools that work in conjunction with the iPad to improve the student learning experience.  These pilots will help us make informed decisions about what type of technology we will adopt for use in the classroom on a permanent basis.

iPad Pro

What new potential does the latest version of iPad, the iPad Pro, bring to the classroom?  This team will test the opportunities provided by the larger surface area and the bluetooth connected stylus.  Could the iPad pro replace the need for interactive whiteboards?  Are flipped classrooms a more approachable model when the iPad Pro is in the hands of teachers?

Belkin Tablet Stage Stand + App

This stand in conjunction with the app, allows teachers to utilize the iPad as a document camera.  The benefits to this tool over a regular document camera is that teachers can annotate digitally on items, record videos of the content they are showing for viewing later, and the iPad is not a single use device like a document camera.  To learn more about the tool, visit this site.

Stylus

We are adopting two different kinds of stylus this year.  At the Early Childhood level, we will be exploring the Cosmonaut Wide Grip Stylus.  This stylus has a thick diameter which is important for developing students’ motor skills with writing utensils.  The second model is for the upper grades to use.  Many of our teachers are exploring the power of sketchnotes and the Adonit Jot Pro is reviewed as one of the best stylus available for sketching and note taking.

Sketchnoting

The art of Sketchnotes is a new trend of engaging students with active note taking to develop a better comprehension of the information they are being taught by processing the content through images that connect the big ideas.  Various people from Mike Rohde to Kathy Schrock are providing support to educators on how to guide their students to be more purposeful note takers.

Manipulative Peripherals

Two different companies have developed a variety of manipulative items that interact with the iPad and their developed apps.  The EC-1 classrooms will have an opportunity to work with sets created by Osmo and Tiggly to develop students’ Math, Letter, and Shape knowledge.

Continue the Work

App Selection

Digital Coaches will continue to work with teachers to understand how to critically evaluate apps that best support their learning objectives.  They will continue to reinforce the use of our App Selection Rubric and provide trusted resources that provide well reviewed apps for learning.

Integration Training

The iPad Team will also work with the FDR staff to develop their understanding and knowledge of how iPads can improve the learning experience for students.  They will also share valuable tips and tricks for teachers to understand how the iPads work: things like Guided Access Mode, Hand Gestures, Voice to Text, etc.

Hi!  I’m excited to be a Digital Coach! At the time, I am a Kindergarten Grade teacher, a happy wife and the mother of 4 amazing kids. I love my job and I constantly feel an urge to learn more.   I have a passion for literacy and I enjoy to integrate technology in my class. My experience as a mom and as a teacher tell me that technology is part of the life of kids now. I understand technology is a tool for us teachers, but feel that 21 century children enjoy and feel very comfortable and motivated while learning with any technology device they can have around them.Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 1.48.29 PM  When I find out the school has been using any new form of technology I always spend time at home playing around with it or reading about it.  My mind goes around thinking about ways to use technology in my class. I like to keep my webpage updated and feel it is a great way to communicate with parents as well.  I am not afraid to try things out in my class or to ask for help either.  This year, I attended the ISTE conference. My goal was to learn how to use Ipads more effectively in my class.

My learning goal for this semester will be to do some app smashing in the class and create some beautiful kids reflections that I can upload to their digital portfolios. I will ask my digital coach friends to share any blogs with app reviews with me.
