FDR keeps thinking green and acting green. The technology team and the operations department at FDR have recently collected all the school’s electric and electronic waste and delivered it at “Parque de la amistad” (see photos). Participating in the first “Collection of e-waste campaign” is another step in the right direction, this campaign is an effort of Municipalidad de Surco and the Ministerio del Medio Ambiente along with others to reduce the amount of e-waste that ends in the wrong place. Electronic equipment may contain very dangerous chemicals like nickel, cadmium and mercury, which if disposed along with regular trash could contaminate air, soil, superficial water and groundwater.

THINK GREEN ACT GREEN

June 11, 2010

HISTORY:

Toward the end of the 2008-09 school year, students chose “Think Green – Act Green” as the theme for 2009-10. Students, teachers, and administrators who are passionate about environmental issues formed the Green Team in May of 2009. In preparation for the 2009-10 school year, the Green Team created a mission statement and goals, established a website, and designated one Friday a month as a Green Day on the school’s 2009-10 calendar. The Green Team asked that the school calendar be printed on recycled paper and put a “Green Tip” on each page to highlight an action our students and their families could take that would collectively make a difference to our environment.

Once the 2009-10 school year began, the Green Team started meeting weekly and continued to meet regularly throughout the year. At these meetings, the Green Team focused on Green Day planning and working toward our eight initiatives.

MISSION:

The purpose of “Think Green Act Green” is to empower the Roosevelt community to protect our planet and to develop socially responsible solutions for taking action. We want members of the Roosevelt community to make ecologically friendly choices in their daily routines.

GOAL 1 – Institutionalize campus initiatives to reduce waste

The Green Team worked on the following four initiatives:

1. Establish a campus-wide recycling program – Presently, there are 24 sets of eco-bin stations located throughout our campus. Paper, plastic, tetrapak, and trash are all disposed of in different colored bins. The Middle School Eco Club created signs and taped them to the bins to show exactly what can be put in each one. The Green Team continues to work with students to educate them regarding the proper use of the bins and also aids the workers in getting what they need to see the recycling process through to completion.

2. End the sale of bottled water on campus – The Green Team wanted to stop of sale of bottled water on campus, thereby reducing our consumption of plastic products. The Green Team began work on this initiative by asking for the school’s water to be tested according to the most stringent Peruvian and US standards, as the school had to ensure that the water students would be drinking from the tap would be safe. These test results have led to the purchase of a new filtration system which will be installed this July break. The Green Team will pursue this goal once again during the 2010-11 school year and ask students to fill up water bottles instead of buying bottled water.

3. Stop the sale and use of all Styrofoam on our campus– There has been a drastic reduction of the use of Styrofoam. The Green Team will continue to work with the providers at our kiosks until there is no Styrofoam consumed at FDR.

4. Establish a compost system– Our eco silos have been built and are being fed with organic materials left over after food preparation. The Green Team will continue to focus their efforts on this initiative so that the eco silos are used at a greater capacity for producing our own fertilizer.

Goal 2 – Promote sustainable practices through environmental education.

The Green Team worked on the following four initiatives:

5. Create a Green Team website with info for students, teachers, and parents – http://blog.amersol.edu.pe/green_team/

This website was featured in the January 2010 issue of IB World Magazine which highlighted successful environmental projects in IBO World Schools. Our website has become an incredible resource for our school community. It’s updated daily with resources including videos our students have made, videos produced professionally, links to other websites, lesson plans for teachers, and blog entries. Please continue to visit our website next year.

6. Plan Special Days/ Events – “Think Green – Act Green” organic cotton t-shirts, designed by one of our students, were sold throughout the year so that students and staff could wear them on each Green Day (one Friday per month). The first Green Day of the year included a lively K-12 concert performed by a percussion band using only recycled materials. Other Green Day activities have included workshops given by students and teachers, middle school and high school assemblies, games, presentations, and guest speakers.

7. Use of our facilities to promote green practices – This year a Gardening Club created and maintained a vegetable and flower garden, and they are expanding the garden for next year. An experimental hydroponics garden was also set up and used with middle school students during the first semester.

8. Connect Green Team goals to the curriculum – Ecological themes run through our curriculum in numerous areas, ranging from literature to science. Many teachers used the Green Team website, especially on Green Days to highlight particular issues. Next year, the Green Team hopes to calculate the school’s carbon footprint and to work toward being a carbon neutral school.

GREEN TEAM PLANS FOR 2010-11

The Green Team will continue to meet regularly and work toward our goals and initiatives. The first Friday of each month will be designated as “Green T-shirt Day” and students will be allowed to come to school out of uniform and wear their Think Green – Act Green t-shirts. Sale of these t-shirts will continue. In addition, the Green Team will actively participate in the planning of the Global Issues Network (GIN) Conference scheduled to be hosted by our school on October 21-23, 2011.

INFORME SOBRE EL AÑO TEMÁTICO 2009-2010

“Piensa Verde – Actúa Verde”

11 de junio de 2010

HISTORIA:

http://blog.amersol.edu.pe/green_team/
